Notting Hill Carnival 2015

2015-08-30 13.17.14So this is a fairly random event for me to attend to be honest, (if you know me, you know I’m much happier sat at home with a glass of wine watching box sets!) and I had absolutely no idea what to expect, but I’ve always wanted to go and see what all the fuss is about, so I headed out west on Sunday to have a little look…

2015-08-30 13.16.55In all honesty it was a world apart from what I expected. I thought there would be crazy colourful floats with loads of things going on, but in my experience of the day, the floats were only a small part of it, and tended to be just absolutely wedged full of giant speakers rather than having anything particularly exciting happening on them. These guys above ^^ were probably the most entertaining participants of the day! Don’t get me wrong, the music was great, and the people on the mics were properly gee-ing up the crowd and getting everyone involved, but it was really just a parade of trucks with speakers on, occasionally with a group of people (sometimes dressed up, sometimes not), dancing along behind.2015-08-30 13.19.35
2015-08-30 13.19.47Outside of the trucks, there were loads of random stalls set up with DJs and music blaring out – little mini club rooms almost! And that was great fun, although it did get pretty crowded. (Do I sound like a granny or what?!)2015-08-30 14.01.10
2015-08-30 13.29.35There were also a tonne of food stalls – this is where my interest peaked! So many things to choose from. I ended up getting fried jerk chicken and chips, and then of course later had food envy when I found out there were burgers – damn it.2015-08-30 13.34.38
2015-08-30 15.13.13The slightly scary thing is that all the nice shops are totally boarded up for the entire carnival. I mean, I get why they do it, for sure, but it just makes it all look somewhat desolate and a bit like a ghost town – it’s all a bit odd. And even though I went onΒ the Sunday (which is the kids day) there’s this weird sense at about 6pm that things are about to kick off… Everyone’s fairlyΒ drunk at this point and the crowds are ridiculous, you genuinely have to shove through people to actually get anywhere, so it all starts to get a little heated.2015-08-30 15.30.12
2015-08-30 15.11.20My favourite part (except for all the food) was the fact that I spotted this bookshop^^, which I thiiiiink, is supposed to be based on the one from Notting Hill the movie (y’know, with Hugh and Julia), I mean it had a picture of the film in the window, so yeah. πŸ™‚2015-08-30 16.08.34
2015-08-30 15.52.31One thing to be aware of at carnival is that you end up walking miles and miles and miles. I’m not exactly the worlds biggest fan of exercise, although I don’t have any great aversion to walking, but by the time I got home I was ready to collapse in bed for the night! I checked on the health app on my iPhone and I’d done over 23,000 steps – ouch!2015-08-30 14.59.02
2015-08-30 15.30.01All being said, I’m really glad I ventured out to see what it was all about, but I’m not particularly fussed about going again to be honest – I’ve seen everything I wanted to seeΒ and that’s enough for me! (Granny’s gonna pop her hair net back on and curl up on the sofa with her boxsets..!)2015-08-30 15.34.37
2015-08-30 17.02.03Have you ever been to carnival before? Did you have a different experience to me? I’m intrigued to see what other people thought!
